GUIDED TOUR - HOW TO USE THIS DEMO DISK
Please Note: This demo will not print or save files.
Before You Begin:
• Pull down the View Menu and choose "Size to Fit". This fits the score horizontally in the window.
• If you are using a MIDI keyboard make sure your MIDI setup (under the Setup Menu) is correct for your equipment.
Entering Notes:
You can put notes on an Encore staff in four ways:
1) inserting with the mouse
2) inserting with a MIDI keyboard in step time
3) playing a MIDI keyboard in real time
4) importing a MIDI file or Master Tracks Pro sequence
To insert notes with the mouse:
• In the Notes palette to the left of the score window, click on the note duration you want.
• Click on the staff where you want the note.
• Use the number keys on your computer keyboard for selecting durations. Example: 1= whole note, 2= half note, 3= quarter note, etc.
• Make sure the Auto Space function under the Setup Menu is on. If this item is not checked, Encore will not calculate the correct number of beats in a measure. Example: placing 5 quarter notes in a 4/4 measure.
To insert chords with the mouse:
• Enter the first note of the chord (any note you like) by clicking as you did for single notes.
• Click directly above or below the first note, on the appropriate line or space, to write the remaining notes of the chord.
To make a note sharp or flat:
• In the note palette, click on the sharp, flat, double sharp, double flat or natural icon, or press "s", "f" or "n" on your computer's keyboard.
• Click on the head of the note in the score.
• Click again to remove the sharp or flat from the note.
To insert notes with a MIDI keyboard in step time:
• Press "a" or click on the arrow icon.
• Click on the spot in the score where you want to insert the first note.
• Click on any note duration in the Notes palette.
• Play either single notes or chords, one at a time, on your MIDI controller.
• Click on different note values in the Notes palette to change durations.
• Use the "r" key to change to rests, of the selected duration, instead of notes.
• Use the number keys on your computer keyboard for selecting durations. Example: 1= whole note, 2= half note, 3= quarter note, etc.
To import a Master Tracks Pro sequence or a MIDI file:
• Pull down the File menu and choose Open... Encore will open Encore, Master Tracks Pro and MIDI files from this menu.
• Select the BACH-MIDI File from the Songs folder of the Encore Demo Disk.
Encore will automatically guess the note durations and beam the notes after you import or play a piece of music (as long as "Auto Beam/Guess" is selected in the Setup Menu).
To record in real time:
• Click the arrow pointer on the first bar of the score.
• From the toolbar, click the Record button (or press the Enter key).
• After the 4-beat countoff, play a few bars of music on your MIDI instrument.
• Click the Record button again (or press the Space bar) to stop recording.
To play the score:
• Press "a" on your computer to get the arrow pointer.
• Click the arrow pointer on the first bar of the score.
• Press the space bar or click the Play button on the toolbar. Any music you've placed in the score will play back over MIDI channel 1.
EDITING
There are three primary ways to edit a score in Encore: using the Staff Sheet, by clicking and dragging, and by using menu items to edit notes you've selected.
Staff Sheet Editing:
Use the Staff Sheet (Command+/) to set the play status, size, playback key (part transposition), MIDI channel, MIDI program number and volume for each staff.
Setting MIDI Channels:
Each staff can be set to a different MIDI channel and program number. This allows different instruments or patches to play back on each staff.
Encore supports two ports of MIDI (A and B) and up to 32 MIDI channels. Encore also supports Apple MIDI Manager.
• Pull down the Windows menu and select "Staff Sheet",
(or press Command+/). The Staff Sheet window appears.
• Click on the box below "Chan" (A1 is the default). You'll see the "Choose Channel/Port" dialog box.
• In voice 1, select a checkbox for any MIDI channel from 1 to 16.
Note: Each voice in a staff can contain a different MIDI channel and program number assignment. This allows you to play multiple instruments on the same staff. The default has all voices set to the same MIDI channel.
• Click OK. This causes staff 1 to play over the channel you designated. Follow the same procedure to set the MIDI channel for any additional staves.
Program changes:
Using the Staff Sheet window, you can enter a MIDI program change number for any staff you want. When Encore plays the score back from the first bar, it will automatically set your MIDI instruments to the program change numbers you've entered. You can view the program change as numbers or expand the column to a text field of program names.
• In the Staff Sheet (Command + /), click on the heading of the "Prog" column. The column expands to show program names rather than numbers.
• To choose a program name for a staff, click in the column below the word "Program" in the appropriate staff line.
• From the "Choose Instrument" dialog box, click on the "Device" button and choose your synthesizer if it is listed - if it's not, then leave it set to "Generic".
• Click on the desired sound or program number to send the preset change to your instrument.
• Click OK.
The music in Staff 1 will now play with the synth patch you've designated. You can also use the Staff Sheet to change the overall volume and playback key of a staff, in much the same way.

• Select the Tools palette from the Windows menu.
• Click on the slur icon. This is the first item in the top left corner of the Tools palette.
• Click on the score three times: once where you want the left end of the slur, once in the center, and once at the right end of the slur. You can edit the slur by clicking and dragging the control points on the slur with the arrow pointer.
• You can also automatically slur between two notes by highlighting a range of notes and using ( command+L). See selection editing below.
Selection Editing:
You can edit in Encore by selecting items, then use the menu commands to alter them.
Encore has many ways of selecting (using the arrow pointer selected):
• Select a measure by double-clicking on any blank spot in that measure.
• Select an entire staff line by clicking once in the margin to the left of the staff.
• Select an entire staff to the end of the score by double-clicking in
the margin to the left of the staff.
• Select a range of notes by clicking and holding on a blank spot in
the score, and then dragging a rectangle around the group of notes.
• Select several discontinuous areas by holding the Shift key as you are selecting regions.
• Select one or more individual notes by holding the Shift key and clicking on the note heads.
After you make a selection, Encore's menu commands can alter the selection in many ways.
Beam notes:
• To add beams to any group of notes, select the notes to be beamed.
• From the Notes menu, choose "Beam Group" from the "Beam Notes" sub-menu. Encore will beam all appropriate notes together
. Note: if any of the selected notes have been beamed, the beam command will unbeam the notes with the first command. Select Beam Group again and all the selected notes will then be beamed.
Changing note durations:
• Select any note, group or groups of notes.
• From the Notes Menu, choose "Change Duration".
• Click in the box labeled: "Set note type to:"
• Click the button for any note value.
• Click OK. The selected notes will change to the value you designated.
Automatic Part Extraction (To produce a part for an individual musician):
• Select the part you wish to extract by clicking in the margin to the left of the staff. If you wish to extract more than one staff you can hold down the shift key to select the additional staves (all selected staves must be consecutive within the system)
• From the File Menu, choose Extract Part. A new window will appear with the part(s) you designated. You have the option to compress measures of whole note rests down to a single measure with a number representing how many rests there are.
Voicing:
When importing and guessing prerecorded sequences or recording music into Encore, all notes on each staff are assigned to a single voice. In many cases this will be correct but there are two occasions where multiple voices might be needed to display the music. The first will occur if you wish to display two instruments on the same staff. The second may occur when trying to notate for instruments capable of playing two or more voices, such as a piano. You may also have a piano staff consisting of a bass and treble clef set for the same voice. This allows you to have cross-staff beaming.
Entering and Viewing Different Voices in Encore:
In the toolbar is a box with the word "Voice -". This is the Voice Selection pop-up menu. When "Voice -" is selected all voices can be selected and edited. Information entered with the mouse or MIDI keyboard is always assigned to voice 1 in this mode. Highlighting one of the eight choices will limit editing, viewing and new note entry to the voice number selected.
To Enter Two Instruments On a Single Staff:
• Select either "Voice -" or simply "1" to enter the first instrument.
• Use either the Note palette or MIDI keyboard to enter/record music for your first instrument.
• Select "2" in the voice pop-up menu. Notes entered for voice 1 will become "grayed out".
• Enter the second instrument's note information.
• While still viewing only voice 2 note information, make any changes to stem direction or beaming that you would like. Voice one (your first instrument) will be unaffected. If you need to edit the first voice only, you can select and edit only voice 1 info in the same fashion.
• To assign different MIDI channels and program numbers for each voice use the Staff Sheet, making the appropriate changes in the fields for each voice indicated.
To Notate Two Voices Used by a Single Instrument:
Normally, Encore assigns all information to a single voice. An instrument such as a piano will frequently play more than one voice, however, as in the case where a chord is held for an entire measure while additional notes are then played. Under these circumstances, you will need to use more than one voice or Encore will not indicate the correct durations.
Entering Multiple Voices in Encore:
As an example of multiple voices we will use a chord held for one measure with three quarter notes played after the first beat.
• Select "voice 1" (or "Voice -") and enter a rest followed by three quarter notes.
• Select "voice 2" and enter a whole note chord in the same measure.
• As in the example above, stem direction and other editing operations will only affect the notes assigned to the same voice as the voice selected.
• Normally when notating a single instrument requiring multiple voicings, the Staff Sheet (command + /) should have all voices assigned to the same MIDI channel and program assignments.
• Rests are only visible in voices 1 and 5 in the score. The rests in the other voices are hidden. If you wish these rests to be visible select "Show/Hide... " from the Setup Menu and uncheck the rests you do not wish to have hidden.
• If the music you are editing has been imported or recorded in real time, you should determine and select notes which should be assigned to additional voices, and with those notes selected, use the Command key plus a number key to assign those notes to a new voice.
If the above example was recorded in real time, for instance, Encore's guessing routine would turn the chord into quarter notes instead of whole notes. To correct this you would select those notes and use (Command + 2) to change the chord to voice 2. A quarter note rest could then be added to voice one (turn Auto Space in the Setup Menu off before doing this). Finally, you would switch to voice 2 and change the duration of the chord from a quarter note to a whole note.
Guitar Tablature:
Encore 3.0 allows you to turn an existing staff of music into guitar tablature, complete with the correct fingering for any tuning.
To create a guitar tablature staff:
• Select a staff of music you wish to convert. Select the entire staff by clicking once in the margin to the left of the staff.
• From the Notes Menu select "Make Tab". You will see a dialog which says: "use next tab staff" or "create new tab staff".
• Select "create new tab staff" then, click on the Setup button.
From the "Setup Tablature" dialog you can configure the tablature for any number of strings between 4 and 8. The default is 6 strings. You can also change the tuning for any string by typing in the pitch of that string. Encore will automatically create tablature for any tuning selected, using the correct fingering.
• When you've finished, click O.K. to return to the tab dialog.
• Click O.K. again to create the tab staff.
A new staff will appear below the notation staff in guitar tablature format. Once the tab exists, if you highlight the fingering, you can use the "nudge" command - hold down the Command key
and = (up), - (down), ] (right) or [ (left), to move the fingering to the next available string. (See the section on nudging under Click and Drag Editing). You may also enter symbols using the Guitar palette from under the Windows Menu.
Changing tablature notes:
• Make changes to the notes on the associated standard notation staff first.
• Select the entire notation staff by double-clicking to the left of the margin, or click on individual measures to change only that area.
• From the Notes Menu select "Make Tab".
• Select "use next tab staff".
• Click O.K., it will re-align the fingering to reflect the changes in the highlighted staff.
Dynamic symbols:
The Dynamics palette contains dynamic symbols which can be used to affect MIDI playback. This is accomplished by scaling the velocity information for all notes following a dynamic indication.
Setting the dynamic range:
• Select the Dynamics palette from under the Windows Menu.
• Double-click on any dynamic symbol to open the "Set Dynamic Range" dialog box.
The top eight dynamic symbols can optionally scale MIDI velocities. The velocity values for any of the first eight dynamic symbols can be adjusted. When "Play Them" is selected, all notes after the dynamic will be scaled to the velocity range of the dynamic symbol until the next dynamic occurs in the score. Click O.K. to close this dialog.
Entering dynamics:
• Select the desired dynamic symbol from the Dynamics palette using the pencil tool.
• Click in the score at the location you would like the dynamic to occur.
Using the arrow tool, you can move dynamics. This is done by clicking and holding on the dynamic symbol and dragging it to the new location. To delete a dynamic symbol, switch to the eraser tool from the toolbar and click on the symbol. It will dissapear.
Entering repeats:
• To change a measure to a repeat bar, select the measure by
double-clicking on it.
• From the Measure Menu choose "Barline types...".
• A "Barline Types" dialog will appear with buttons for both left and right barlines.
• Select the button for the type of barline you wish to use.
• Click in the "Play Repeats" checkbox to have Encore follow the repeat bars.
• Click O.K. and you will see that measure now has the associated barline on it.
Entering endings:
• To change a measure to an ending measure, select the measure by double-clicking on it.
• From the Measure Menu select "Endings... ". A "Measure Endings" dialog will appear.
• Select the checkbox for the ending number you wish to use.
• Select the "Play them" checkbox to have Encore follow the measure endings. This will send Encore to the previous left repeat measure.
• Click O.K. That measure now has the associated ending above it.
Accents and Articulations:
Encore contains markings for accents and articulations. These marks can also affect MIDI playback.
• Select the Marks 2 palette from under the Windows Menu.
• Double-click on an accent tool. A "Set Note Marks" dialog will appear. You can configure the accent marks to apply an additional fixed velocity amount to each notes recorded velocity. The default MIDI velocity for mouse entered notation is 64. Step Entry via MIDI uses the velocity sent from your MIDI keyboard.
• The articulations allow you to add staccato and legato marks to a note. This percentage is applied to the note's duration as it appears in your score and not the duration with which it is currently being played. The previous duration is preserved but superceded by the addition of the articulation. If you remove the articulation or uncheck "play them" in the setup dialog, the note will return to the duration saved with the MIDI note.
Attaching marks to a note:
• Select an accent or articulation from the Marks 2 palette.
• Click on the head of the note in the score. Encore will automatically place the mark above the note regardless of stem direction. To place a mark below a note, hold the option key down while applying the mark.
• Adjusting the vertical position of the mark is accomplished by holding the shift key down after applying the mark and clicking again with the same mark on the note's head. Each click will raise the mark a litter further. Eventually, a maximum vertical adjustment will be entered and the mark will drop to the lowest possible position. Continued clicks will return you to the starting location.
Deleting or replacing marks:
• Apply the same mark or the new mark to the note. Adding the same mark a second time to a note will remove the mark. Adding a new mark to a note will replace the previous mark.
